Virginia Beach deep drop fishing, relatively new to recreational anglers, has become one of the most popular deep sea fishing trips we offer. It’s where the BIG bottom fish are.
Captain Jake has fished this region for several years and it has become a world class charter and recreational fishery. In many places off Virginia the bottom has been untouched and neglected for years. This neglect in the 40 to 150 fathom depths has grown some huge bottomfish.
We catch a variety of species on our deep drop offshore fishing trips, including some jumbo black sea bass, blueline tilefish, golden tilefish, snowy grouper, rosefish, cod, haddock, hake, and many other strange species that come up from the deep.

Wreck fishing is also extremely popular with anglers. Usually quite a bit farther offshore, wreck fishing is in much deeper water, these trips are the way to go if you want to fill your freezer with fillets. All of the species we target when deep drop and wreck fishing are excellent table fare, and we have some true monsters coming from the deep.
In the past two years, the Virginia state and all tackle world record blueline tilefish, snowy grouper, and golden tilefish have been caught several times so literally on every trip you have a very real potential of catching a state or even world record fish!

The reason that so many record fish like these are caught is because the deep sea bottom species are not fished out by every Virginia Beach angler with a fishing boat. Because deep drop fishing is done in very deep water much further offshore, finding a wreck or reef to fish is like finding a needle in a very big haystack.
This is why the actual fleet of charter boats that does this type of fishing is relatively small. Only some of the most qualified charters like Matador which has all the proper gear can safely fish these waters.
