Spring has spring here in Virginia beach and it’s time to go fishing! Last night matador charters ran its first trip of the year and we went to the eastern shore to fish at the mouth of the Chesapeake bay for red drum and black drum aboard the "toro" boat. While the fishing wasnt on fire, we had several drum bites, caught a citation sized red drum that we released, brought home a black drum for the grill, and also released several sharks. It was really great to get out on the water and starting off our charter fishing season with a citation is really a great start to our 2019 Virginia beach charter fishing season. Last week we did another overnight offshore make up charter fishing trip out of the Virginia Beach fishing center. The target was supposed to be tuna but after a couple hours of trolling and no bites, we changed gears and set up for swords and sharks. Underdogs crew helped our anglers to catch and release a couple nice hammerhead sharks earning the anglers a Virginia release citation for their efforts and in the night we caught and released a swordfish. As the sun rose, we trolled a little more with no luck so turned quickly to bottom fishing and caught a really nice mess of a nice class of sea bass, and the new pending Virginia state record grey triggerfish at 6 pounds 12 ounces for angler Dave Walden. once we had a full box of fish for our group and everyone had got the chance to catch a couple nice fish, we changed gears and went north to the norfolk canyon to target daytime swordfish. We fished for 3 hours getting 3 bites, catching and releasing one swordfish and landing another.
